December 5, 2003 100 PDT (FTW) -- After many years as a privacy advocate and author of privacy books, I now reluctantly believe that there's one citizen of the United States who is not entitled to any privacy or solitude, but should be subjected to a relentless campaign of intimidation, harassment, and knavery. In other words, patriotic Americans who believe in fair play should -- within the bounds of the law -- make this person's life a living hell.

The target for such a campaign is Karl Rove, George W. Bush's political Svengali, and the chief instigator of character assassination campaigns against those who challenge the policies of the Bush administration. Democrats, progressives and the liberally inclined must learn to fight fire with fire, Rove tactics against Rove tactics. This evil practitioner of political chicanery earned his stripes first as an apprentice of Richard Nixon's dirty trickster, Donald Segretti. Rove then went on to hone and refine his duplicitous craft under Republican National Committee chairmen George H. W. Bush, Lee Atwater, and, finally, George W. Bush (who affectionately and alternately calls Rove his "boy genius" and "turd blossom").

After trashing the personal character of former Texas Democratic Governors Mark White and Ann Richards, Texas Democratic Representative Lloyd Doggett, and Arizona Republican Senator John McCain, Rove now uses his Felix the Cat-like bag of dirty tricks to assassinate the characters of noble and non-political men and women. It is clearly time to take action against Rove, and give this maniac a taste of his own bitter medicine.

Over the years, Rove has relied on the planting of bogus stories in the media, production of counterfeit documents, the theft of campaign materials and internal documents, production of false witnesses, electronic eavesdropping, misuse of government resources, unethical political polling techniques, intimidation of minority voters, and "whispering campaigns" to advance the sordid agenda of the neo-conservative, extreme right wing of the Republican Party.

Rove reached his outrage limit with me when Iraq war veteran and prisoner of war Private Jessica Lynch accused the Bush administration and the neo-con Pentagon of hyping her capture for blatant political purposes. Regarding the Hollywood-like production used by White House and Pentagon propagandists to document her rescue from an Iraqi hospital, where she was receiving medical treatment for her injuries (and not abuse by Iraqi soldiers), Lynch told ABC News, "Yeah, it does [bother me]. It does that they used me as a way to symbolize all this stuff," Lynch said, "I mean, yeah, it's wrong ... I don't know what they had ... or why they filmed it."

The despicable Rove character assassination machinery soon went into full gear. First, gargoyle-like neo-con commentators such as Charles Krauthammer began criticizing Lynch for selling her book rights and accused her of hypocrisy. Then came reports (unproved and largely dismissed) that Lynch had been sexually molested while being held captive. Then the Rove coup de grace: news that Larry Flynt's Hustler magazine had obtained topless photos of Lynch frolicking with two other male soldiers before deploying to Iraq in early 2001. The photos were reportedly taken deep in the heart of Rove's Texas at Fort Bliss. To his credit, Flynt realized that by publishing the photos he would be playing into Rove's hands, and he decided to secure them. Poor Jessica found out what it is like to go from America's wholesome young heroine to an accused tart. All this, merely for confronting the evil Karl Rove.

Jessica was not the first innocent person to incur the wrath of Rove's maniacal filth machine, but she needs to be the last.

Ambassador Joseph Wilson and his CIA undercover operative wife, Valerie Plame Wilson, also discovered what it was like to be at the receiving end of a Rove dirty tricks campaign. Wilson, who challenged assertions that Iraq sought yellow cake uranium from Niger, was soon pilloried as a partisan political hack seeking the limelight. His wife, Valerie, saw her undercover CIA operation, Brewster Jennings Associates, exposed by Rove's other favorite media gargoyle, Bob Novak. It is almost certain that Rove or one of his deputies provided the classified information to Novak. Wilson later said nothing would make him happier than seeing Karl Rove "frog marched" out of the White House in handcuffs.

Here, here!

Then there was former UN weapons inspector, former Marine Corps officer Scott Ritter. A vocal opponent of the Iraq war, he found himself subject to criminal charges (later summarily dismissed) of improper chat room communications with an undercover cop, posing as a minor, on the Internet. Not only was the case dismissed by a New York State judge, but the transcript was ordered sealed, the usual response when unfounded charges are brought against a person. Still, someone mysteriously unsealed the transcript and leaked it to the press. Ritter similarly discovered what personal harm Rove's political machine can do to those it doesn't like.

Independent-minded Pentagon flag rank officers, from retired Marine Corps General Anthony Zinni to Iraqi War commander General Tommy Franks, have also been on the receiving end of Rove's torrents of abuse and disinformation; Zinni for being outspoken against the war, and Franks for disagreeing with awarding to Silver Star to Lynch. Army Specialist Clinton Deitz of the 2nd Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division told ABC News, "If Donald Rumsfeld was here, I'd ask him for his resignation." Deitz and other soldiers opposed to the insane war were then threatened with court martial by the chickenhawks surrounding Rumsfeld, who were undoubtedly egged on by the demonic Rove. Another 2nd Brigade Sergeant was more pointed when he said, "I've got my own 'Most Wanted' list" of senior Bush administration officials." Sarge, it would not be a complete list without Rove's name on it.

It now appears that former Iraqi proconsul, retired General Jay Garner, was tossed overboard because he disagreed with the disbanding of the Iraqi army. Heresy! He was replaced with the much more sycophantic and dapper L. Paul Bremer III, who played emcee for Bush's Turkey Trot at Baghdad airport.

Others have also faced recriminations from Rove's "Matrix" system of political retribution and retaliation. They include State Department diplomats John H. Brown, John Brady Kiesling, and Mary Wright, all of whom resigned over the war. They were described as low ranking malcontents by the White House spinmeisters. Another target was former State Department Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR) officer Greg Thielmann who spoke about how intelligence was skewed by the neo-cons.

It is not known whether Thielmann's colleague at INR, John Kokal, also voiced concerns about similar issues. We will never know, because tragically, Kokal's shoeless body was discovered in a 20 feet window well, 8 floors below the top of the State Department building early in the evening of November 7th. Contrary to what the State Department said about Kokal, senior State Department sources report that not only was the diplomat a top Iraq specialist, he regularly briefed Secretary of State Colin Powell. The Kokal incident is too reminiscent of the alleged suicide of British Ministry of Defense weapons of mass destruction expert, Dr. David Kelly (who is said to have committed suicide with a dull pen knife and over the counter drugs). Kokal was the first foreign affairs official found dead at the bottom of a foreign ministry since Czechoslovak Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk's body was found in the courtyard below his window in 1948. Masaryk's defenestration preceded the total Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia.

I would hope that Rove would not resort to that kind of political retribution, but in an era when the battle cry is, "If you're not with us, you're against us," who really knows? Would Rove let his Machiavellian attitude dictate more extreme forms of retaliation? Let's hope not, but we shouldn't be surprised if it is otherwise the case.

Because just as the Kokal matter was fading into oblivion, the United Nations headquarters reported that on December 1, an American, Michael Holton, a 16-year veteran of its security police, was found shot to death inside the UN headquarters in New York. It was the first incident of its kind in the history of the UN. The head of the UN security department said there was "no prior indication of psychological problems and that no note was left near the body . . . there were no witnesses and no one was known to have heard anything unusual." Yes, there's a lot of that happening as of late.

It was from Rove's shop that a CD-ROM containing a White House PowerPoint campaign strategy miraculously was "found" in Lafayette Park across from the White House. Ken Mehlman,*Rove's accomplice in the planted park CD scam, is now Bush's 2004 campaign manager. A strategy paper from the Senate Intelligence Committee's Democratic minority staff suddenly wound up in the hands of GOP radio demagogue Sean Hannity.*A*Republican staffer*for the Senate Judiciary Committee was caught hacking into sensitive Democratic files.*Also, consider the bogus intelligence documents pointing to Iraq trying to obtain uranium from Africa. During the 2000 presidential campaign, Rove accused the Democrats of secretly videotaping a Bush debate practice session. All smoke and mirrors designed by Rove to mask his special brand of political conniving. Rove's brand of*subterfuge and chicanery is copied from his Teutonic cousins who practiced it so well in the 1920s, '30s, and '40s.

Was it a coincidence that former Vice President Al Gore (the de jure President of the United States) was subjected twice to special baggage searches at airports during a campaign swing to Wisconsin? No, that was again Rove at work. Just like when Rove and ex-Orkin exterminator Tom DeLay misused Department of Homeland Security, Federal Aviation Administration, and FBI personnel in a search for absent members of the Texas House of Representatives. Then there was the story that leaked to the press about California Governor Gray Davis physically abusing a female staff member. Gray Davis? The man who was likened to Casper Milquetoast, all of a sudden acting like Arnold Schwarzenegger! More Rove fingerprints -- the Davis story appeared as Schwarzenegger was fending off allegations of groping females over his long movie career.

The late FBI counterterrorism agent John P. O'Neill had a briefcase containing some sensitive documents stolen from him as he was attending a retirement planning session in Tampa. The briefcase was later returned with nothing missing. But soon the news of the "stolen briefcase" was leaked to the press, and O'Neill faced his first FBI investigation in his 30-year career. The incident smells of Rove all over it. O'Neill, who was on to the Bush family relationship with Saudis who, in turn, backed Al Qaeda, ironically died at the World Trade Center on 9/11.

The serpentine Rove has directed his venom against a number of international personages as well -- from French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, to former UN chief weapons inspector Hans Blix and International Atomic Energy Agency director Mohammed El Baradei, to former South African President Nelson Mandela and Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. All had opposed the Bush march to war.

I have become aware of journalistic colleagues being mugged (without any theft involved) on the streets of Washington and London. Could these have been warnings to those who have written extensively about the misdeeds of the Bush cabal? Possibly. As the United States continues to sink into a Third World-style dictatorship, we can expect more harassment of journalists and political activists.

Unless, that is, Rove is deep-sixed as a matter of political necessity to shore up Bush's Christian Right base. Washington is awash with stories, including those from the normally pro-Bush conservative Washington Times group, of Rove's Hooveresque off-hours antics (as in J. Edgar Hoover). Gee, Karl, how are you going to square that with the good Reverends Robertson and Falwell?

Well, ho ho ho! It's an early Christmas for James Baker III.

All year the elves at his law firm, Baker Botts of Texas, have been working day and night to prevent the families of the victims of the 9/11 attack from seeking information from Saudi Arabia on the Kingdom's funding of Al Qaeda fronts.

It's tough work, but this week came the payoff when President Bush appointed Baker, the firm's senior partner, to restructure the debts of the nation of Iraq.

And who will net the big bucks under Jim Baker's plan? Answer: his client, Saudi Arabia, which claims $30.7 billion due from Iraq plus $12 billion in reparations from the First Gulf war.


Puppet Strings

Let's ponder what's going on here.

We are talking about something called "sovereign debt." And unless George Bush has finally 'fessed up and named himself Pasha of Iraq, he is not their sovereign. Mr. Bush has no authority to seize control of that nation's assets nor its debts.

But our President is not going to let something as trivial as international law stand in the way of a quick buck for Mr. Baker. To get around the wee issue that Bush has no legal authority to mess with Iraq's debt, the White House has crafted a neat little subterfuge. The official press release says the President has not appointed Mr. Baker. Rather Mr. Bush is "responding to a request from the Iraqi Governing Council." That is, Bush is acting on the authority of the puppet government he imposed on Iraqis at gunpoint.

I will grant the Iraqi "government" has some knowledge of international finance; its key member, Ahmed Chalabi, is a convicted bank swindler.

The Bush team must see the other advantage in having the rump rulers of Iraq pretend to choose Mr. Baker; the U.S. Senate will not have to review or confirm the appointment. If you remember, Henry Kissinger ran away from the 9/11 commission with his consulting firm tucked between his legs after the Senate demanded he reveal his client list. In the case of Jim Baker, who will be acting as a de facto U.S. Treasury Secretary for international affairs, our elected Congress will have no chance to ask him who is paying his firm, nor even require him to get off conflicting payrolls.

This takes the Bush administration' Conflicts-R-Us appointments process to a new low.

Or maybe there's no conflict at all. If you see Jim Baker's new job as working not to protect a new Iraqi democracy but to protect the loot of the old theocracy of Saudi Arabia, the conflict disappears.

Iraq's debt totals something on the order of $120 billion to $150 billion, depending on who's counting. And who's counting is very important.

Much of the so-called debt to Saudi Arabia was given to Saddam Hussein to fight a proxy war for the Saudis against their hated foe, the Shi'ia of Iran. And as disclosed by a former Saudi diplomat, the kingdom's sheiks handed about $7 billion to Saddam under the table in the 1980's to build an "Islamic bomb."

Should Iraqis today and those not yet born have to be put in a debtor's prison to pay off the secret payouts to Saddam? James Wolfensohn, president of the World Bank, says 'No!' Wolfensohn has never been on my Christmas card list, but in this case he's got it right: Iraq should simply cancel $120 billion in debt.

Normally, the World Bank is in charge of post-war debt restructuring. That's why the official name of the World Bank is "International Bank for Reconstruction and Development." This is the Bank's expertise. Bush has rushed Baker in to pre-empt the debt write-off the World Bank would certainly promote.


"I Fixed Florida"

Why is our President so concerned with the wishes of Mr. Baker's clientele? What does Bush owe Baker? Let me count the ways, beginning with the 2000 election.

Just last week Baker said, I fixed the election in Florida for George Bush. That was the substance of his remarks last week to an audience of Russian big wigs as reported to me by my somewhat astonished colleagues at BBC television.

It was Baker, as consiglieri to the Bush family, who came up with the strategy of maneuvering the 2000 Florida vote count into a Supreme Court packed with politicos.

Baker's claim to have fixed the election was not a confession; it was a boast. He meant to dazzle current and potential clients about his Big In with the Big Boy in the White House. Baker's firm is already a top player in the Great Game of seizing Caspian Sea oil. (An executive of Exxon-Mobil, one of Baker Botts's clients, has been charged with evading taxes on bribes paid in Kazakhstan.)


All In The Family

Over the years, Jim Baker has taken responsibility for putting bread on the Bush family table. As Senior Counsel to Carlyle, the arms-dealing investment group, Baker arranged for the firm to hire both President Bush 41 after he was booted from the White House and President Bush 43 while his daddy was still in office.

Come to think of it, maybe I'm being a bit too dismissive of the Iraqi make-believe government. After all, it's not as if George Bush were elected by voters either. It would be more accurate to say that TWO puppet governments have agreed to let the man who has always pulled the strings come out from behind the curtain, take a bow, take charge—then take the money and run.

U.S. Sees Evidence of Overcharging in Iraq Contract

By DOUGLAS JEHL WASHINGTON, Dec. 11 ” A Pentagon investigation has found evidence that a subsidiary of the politically connected Halliburton Company overcharged the government by as much as $61 million for fuel delivered to Iraq under huge no-bid reconstruction contracts, senior military officials said Thursday. The subsidiary, Kellogg, Brown & Root, also submitted a proposal for cafeteria services that seemed to be inflated by $67 million, the officials said. The Pentagon rejected that proposal, they said. The problems involving Halliburton, where Vice President Dick Cheney was chief executive, were described in a preliminary report by auditors, the officials said.

The Pentagon contracts were awarded without competitive bidding and have a potential value of $15.6 billion; recent estimates by the Army have put the current value of the Halliburton contracts at about $5 billion. Halliburton denied overcharging and called the inquiry a "routine audit." Dave Lesar, the company's chairman, president and chief executive, said in an e-mail statement, "We welcome a thorough review of any and all of our government contracts." Dov Zakheim, the Pentagon's budget chief, said, "Contractor improprieties and/or contract mischarging on department contracts will neither be condoned nor allowed to continue." Halliburton, which had more than $12.5 billion in revenues in 2002, has emerged as a symbol for many people who opposed the war in Iraq and who claimed that the interests of such companies with close political ties were given too much consideration by the administration.

Criticism intensified when Halliburton received the no-bid contract to provide billions of dollars in services in Iraq. Administration officials counter that few companies have the resources and expertise to carry out the work needed. Military officials said the Pentagon was negotiating with K.B.R. over how to resolve the fuel charges. But Michael Thibault, deputy director of the Defense Contract Audit Agency, said in a telephone interview that a draft report by the agency had recommended that the Army Corps of Engineers seek reimbursement. The officials said Halliburton did not appear to have profited from overcharging for fuel, but had instead paid a subcontractor too much for the gasoline in the first place. Halliburton has also said that one reason it needed to charge a high price for fuel was that it must be delivered in a combat zone.

Several K.B.R. workers have been killed or wounded in attacks by Iraqis. Other questions, in a second contract with the Army, involved unacceptable delays by the subsidiary in providing cost estimates for dozens of projects already under way in Iraq, Mr. Thibault said. These violations, for work that includes the construction of food, housing and other facilities for the military, could involve inflated costs as well, he added. A spokeswoman for Halliburton, Wendy Hall, said in an e-mail message that the inquiry was part of a "routine audit" and that it was "not the fact that K.B.R. has overcharged." Mr. Lesar, the chief executive, said in his e-mail: "We will work with all government agencies to establish that our contracts are not only good for the United States, but also the company is the best and most qualified contractor to perform these difficult and dangerous tasks." Mr. Thibault said that it would be "premature" to describe the auditor's conclusions as final, that the investigation was continuing and that the Halliburton subsidiary "deserves a chance to respond to our findings." He said auditors expected to issue a final report this month, but added that the preliminary findings involved overcharging that was "potentially very substantial."

The two Halliburton contracts are by far the largest awarded by the Pentagon in Iraq. Some Democrats have criticized the awarding of contracts to the Halliburton subsidiary, saying they might appear to be a political payoff to a company well connected with Republicans. But administration and Halliburton officials have denied that politics played any role in the awards to K.B.R., whose work in Iraq involves a contract with the Army Corps of Engineers for repairing and restoring Iraq's oil industry. The initial value of the work was set at $7 billion. A second contract with the Army for logistical support has a maximum value of $8.6 billion, military officials said. Mr. Thibault would not be specific about the basis on which the auditors have found evidence that the Halliburton subsidiary has overcharged for the fuel it is providing in Iraq under the oil contract. But government documents show that the United States government is paying Halliburton an average of $2.64 a gallon to import gasoline to Iraq from Kuwait, more than twice what others are paying. Representative Henry A. Waxman, a California Democrat who has been a leading Congressional critic of the contract, said the preliminary audit "confirms what we've known for months: Halliburton has been gouging taxpayers and the White House has been letting them get away with it." "It is deplorable and we need to put an immediate end to it," Mr. Waxman said in a written statement. "There needs to be a top-to-bottom review of all the Iraqi contracts."

Defense Department and other government officials said a draft report of the audit agency's finding was sent to K.B.R. on Dec. 5 and included "harsh assessments" of the company's handling of its contract to import fuel from Kuwait. Mr. Thibault said that Halliburton had promised a response by Dec. 17, and that the agency would issue a final report within a week after that. Once that report is complete, it will be turned over to the clients, including the Army Corps of Engineers, which contracted with K.B.R. in March for tens of millions of gallons of gasoline, benzene and other fuel. The audit agency has also discussed with K.B.R. the delays in the pricing of elements of the logistics contract, military officials said. Among projects under way, the company has provided the government with cost estimates for just 12 orders, with 69 outstanding and overdue, the officials said. They said the delays raised the possibility that the company would eventually claim an unacceptably high cost for a project whose work was already largely completed. The company's work for the military in Iraq has evolved from putting out oil field fires to overseeing rebuilding of Iraq's oil infrastructure and providing fuel. K.B.R. also provides support to American troops, including serving meals.

Mr. Cheney, the former chief executive, left Halliburton in 2000, after President Bush asked him to become his running mate. The Army awarded the logistics contract to Halliburton in 2001, on a competitive basis, but its size has swelled since the Iraq war, with additional work awarded to Halliburton without competition. The second contract, for oil reconstruction projects, was formally awarded in March on a "sole source" basis, but the decision to give the project to Halliburton was made in late 2002 by senior administration officials who were part of a secret task force planning for postwar Iraq. Masaryk's defenestration preceded the total Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia.

Business Deals, Sex Romps in Neil Bush Deposition
Divorce Proceedings Shed Light on Life of President's Younger Brother

HOUSTON (Nov 25) - Neil Bush, younger brother of President George W. Bush, detailed lucrative business deals and admitted to engaging in sex romps with women in Asia in a deposition taken in March as part of his divorce from now ex-wife Sharon Bush.

According to legal documents disclosed on Tuesday, Sharon Bush's lawyers questioned Neil Bush closely about the deals, especially a contract with Grace Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp., a firm backed by Jiang Mianheng, the son of former Chinese President Jiang Zemin, that would pay him $2 million in stock over five years.

Marshall Davis Brown, lawyer for Sharon Bush, expressed bewilderment at why Grace would want Bush and at such a high price since he knew little about the semiconductor business.

"You have absolutely no educational background in semiconductors do you?" asked Brown.

"That's correct," Bush, 48, responded in the March 4 deposition, a transcript of which was read by Reuters after the Houston Chronicle first reported on the documents.

"And you have absolutely over the last 10, 15, 20 years not a lot of demonstrable business experience that would bring about a company investing $2 million in you?"

"I personally would object to the assumption that they're investing $2 million in me," said Bush, who went on to explain that he knew a lot about business and had been working in Asia for years.

Bush, who inked the Grace deal in August 2002, said he had not yet received any stock from the company, which built a plant in Shanghai that began production in September. He is supposed to consult for the company and be on the board of directors, he said.

He said he joined the Grace board at the request of Winston Wong, a co-founder of the company and the son of Wang Yung-ching, the chairman of Taiwan's largest business group, Formosa Plastics Corp. Bush never mentioned Jiang Mianheng in the deposition.

Wong, he said, also is an investor in his latest venture, Ignite!, an Austin, Texas, educational software firm.

A representative at Grace's U.S. office in California had no comment on the Bush contract.

Brown questioned Bush about numerous other business ventures that paid him well to be a consultant and fundraiser, and, in at least one case, for little work.

Bush said he was co-chairman of Crest Investment Corporation, but worked only an average of three to four hours a week. For that, he received $15,000 every three months.

Bush said he provided Crest "miscellaneous consulting services."

"Such as?" asked Brown.

"Such as answering phone calls when Jamail Daniel, the other co-chairman, called and asked for advice," Bush said.

Bush did not return calls to his Ignite! office and his divorce lawyer, Rick Flowers, was not available for comment.

Bush is the third of five children in the family of former President George Bush and wife Barbara.

He was involved in a business controversy in the late 1980s when he was director of Denver, Colorado-based Silverado Savings & Loan, which collapsed at a cost to taxpayers of $1 billion.

He denied any wrongdoing, but was sanctioned by the federal government for his part in the failure.

The Bush divorce, completed in April after 23 years of marriage, was prompted in part by Bush's relationship with another woman. He admitted in the deposition that he previously had sex with several other women while on trips to Thailand and Hong Kong at least five years ago.

The women, he said, simply knocked on the door of his hotel room, entered and had sex with him. He said he did not know if they were prostitutes because they never asked for money and he did not pay them.

"Mr Bush, you have to admit it's a pretty remarkable thing for a man just to go to a hotel room door and open it and have a woman standing there and have sex with her," Brown said.

"It was very unusual," Bush said.

Other presidential siblings of the past have generated controversy, among them Billy Carter, who marketed "Billy Beer" to cash in on brother Jimmy's presidency, and more recently Roger Clinton, who was accused of trying to broker pardons at the end of President Bill Clinton's administration.

It does that they used me as a way to symbolize all this stuff," Lynch said, "I mean, yeah, it's wrong ... I don't know what they had ... or why they filmed it."

The photos were reportedly taken deep in the heart of Rove's Texas at Fort Bliss. To his credit, Flynt realized that by publishing the photos he would be playing into Rove's hands, and he decided to secure them. Poor Jessica found out what it is like to go from America's wholesome young heroine to an accused tart. All this, merely for confronting the evil Karl Rove.

Wilson later said nothing would make him happier than seeing Karl Rove "frog marched" out of the White House in handcuffs.

Army Specialist Clinton Deitz of the 2nd Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division told ABC News, "If Donald Rumsfeld was here, I'd ask him for his resignation." Deitz and other soldiers opposed to the insane war were then threatened with court martial by the chickenhawks surrounding Rumsfeld, who were undoubtedly egged on by the demonic Rove. Another 2nd Brigade Sergeant was more pointed when he said, "I've got my own 'Most Wanted' list" of senior Bush administration officials." Sarge, it would not be a complete list without Rove's name on it.

He was replaced with the much more sycophantic and dapper L. Paul Bremer III, who played emcee for Bush's Turkey Trot at Baghdad airport.

> Others have also faced recriminations from Rove's "Matrix" system of political retribution and retaliation. They include State Department diplomats John H. Brown, John Brady Kiesling, and Mary Wright, all of whom resigned over the war. They were described as low ranking malcontents by the White House spinmeisters. Another target was former State Department Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR) officer Greg Thielmann who spoke about how intelligence was skewed by the neo-cons.

The Kokal incident is too reminiscent of the alleged suicide of British Ministry of Defense weapons of mass destruction expert, Dr. David Kelly (who is said to have committed suicide with a dull pen knife and over the counter drugs). Kokal was the first foreign affairs official found dead at the bottom of a foreign ministry since Czechoslovak Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk's body was found in the courtyard below his window in 1948. Masaryk's defenestration preceded the total Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia.

Yes, there's a lot of that happening as of late.

During the 2000 presidential campaign, Rove accused the Democrats of secretly videotaping a Bush debate practice session. All smoke and mirrors designed by Rove to mask his special brand of political conniving. Rove's brand of*subterfuge and chicanery is copied from his Teutonic cousins who practiced it so well in the 1920s, '30s, and '40s.

> Was it a coincidence that former Vice President Al Gore (the de jure President of the United States) was subjected twice to special baggage searches at airports during a campaign swing to Wisconsin? No, that was again Rove at work. Just like when Rove and ex-Orkin exterminator Tom DeLay misused Department of Homeland Security, Federal Aviation Administration, and FBI personnel in a search for absent members of the Texas House of Representatives. Then there was the story that leaked to the press about California Governor Gray Davis physically abusing a female staff member. Gray Davis? The man who was likened to Casper Milquetoast, all of a sudden acting like Arnold Schwarzenegger! More Rove fingerprints -- the Davis story appeared as Schwarzenegger was fending off allegations of groping females over his long movie career.

> The late FBI counterterrorism agent John P. O'Neill had a briefcase containing some sensitive documents stolen from him as he was attending a retirement planning session in Tampa. The briefcase was later returned with nothing missing. But soon the news of the "stolen briefcase" was leaked to the press, and O'Neill faced his first FBI investigation in his 30-year career. The incident smells of Rove all over it. O'Neill, who was on to the Bush family relationship with Saudis who, in turn, backed Al Qaeda, ironically died at the World Trade Center on 9/11.

President Bush has announced his plan to select Dr. W. David Hager to head up the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Reproductive Health Drugs
Advisory Committee.

The committee has not met for more than two years, during which time its charter lapsed. As a result, the Bush Administration is tasked with filling all eleven positions with new members. This position does not require Congressional approval.

The FDA's Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee makes crucial decisions on matters relating to drugs used in the practice of obstetrics, gynecology and related specialties, including hormone therapy,
contraception, treatment for infertility, and medical alternatives to surgical procedures for sterilization and pregnancy termination.

Dr. Hager's views of reproductive health care are far outside the mainstream for reproductive technology. Dr. Hager is a practicing OB/GYN who describes
himself as "pro-life" and refuses to prescribe contraceptives to unmarried women. Hager is the author of "As Jesus Cared for Women: Restoring Women Then and Now." The book blends biblical accounts of Christ healing women with case studies from Hager's practice.

In the book Dr. Hager wrote with his wife, entitled "Stress and the Woman's Body," he suggests that women who suffer from premenstrual syndrome should seek help from reading the bible and praying. As an editor and contributing author of "The Reproduction Revolution: A Christian Appraisal of Sexuality Reproductive Technologies and the Family," Dr. Hager appears to have endorsed the medically inaccurate assertion that the common birth control
pill is an abortifacient.

Hager's mission is religiously motivated. He has an ardent interest in revoking approval for mifepristone (formerly known as RU-486) as a safe and early form of medical abortion. Hagar recently assisted the Christian Medical Association in a "citizen's petition" which calls upon the FDA to revoke its approval of mifepristone in the name of women's health. Hager's
desire to overturn mifepristone's approval on religious grounds rather than scientific merit would halt the development of mifepristone as a treatment for numerous medical conditions disproportionately affecting women,including breast cancer, uterine cancer, uterine fibroid tumors, psychotic depression, bipolar depression and Cushing's syndrome.

Women rely on the FDA to ensure their access to safe and effective drugs for reproductive health care including products that prevent pregnancy. For
some women, such as those with certain types of diabetes and those undergoing treatment for cancer, pregnancy can be a life-threatening condition. We are concerned that Dr. Hager's strong religious beliefs may color his assessment of technologies that are necessary to protect women's lives or to preserve and promote women's health.

Hager's track record of using religious beliefs to guide his medical decision-making makes him a dangerous and inappropriate candidate to serve as chair of this committee. Critical drug public policy and research must not be held hostage by antiabortion politics. Members of this important panel should be appointed on the basis of science and medicine, rather than
politics and religion. American women deserve no less.

Dr. Hager's nomination to the Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee at the Food and Drug Administration was one that the President could make without Congressional approval. For this reason AAUW, along with a number of diverse organizations, sent a letter to President Bush in October 2002 stating concern regarding Dr. Hager's nomination. However, Dr. Hager has been appointed to the committee and AAUW and other coalition members will continue to monitor the committee's actions.

President Bush has announced his plan to select Dr. W. David Hager to head up the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee. Hager is a practicing obstetrician-gynecologist, and sources told Time magazine that in his private practice he will not prescribe contraceptives to unmarried women. He is also the author of a book
which suggests that women who suffer from premenstrual syndrome should seek help from reading the bible and praying.
The Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee is responsible for offering expert scientific and medical advice to the FDA on matters relating to drugs used in the practice of obstetrics, gynecology, and related specialties. The committee's responsibilities include all contraceptive drugs and drugs used in performing medical abortion as well as drugs used for infertility treatments, hormone replacement therapy and labor and delivery.


Hager's track record of using religious beliefs to guide his medical decision-making makes him a dangerous and inappropriate candidate to serve as chair of this committee. Women rely on the FDA to ensure their access to safe and effective drugs for reproductive health care including products that have been proven to help safely prevent pregnancy. For some women - such as those with certain types of diabetes and those undergoing treatment for cancer - pregnancy can be a life-threatening condition. Religion should not be a barrier to access to safe and effective drugs that are necessary for preserving and promoting women's health and protecting women's lives. There is no place at the FDA for someone who, based on religious beliefs, would deny unmarried women access to technologies which are a part of mainstream medical care and to which all women have a legal right.


To appoint a person who advocates religion as a treatment for medical conditions to such an influential position at the agency responsible for regulation of medical drugs is to deprive the FDA and the women who rely on it of the scientific and medical expertise they deserve.

Would Rove let his Machiavellian attitude dictate more extreme forms of retaliation? Let's hope not, but we shouldn't be surprised if it is otherwise the case.

Me encanta escuchar los relatos de la gente sobre dónde estaba y qué hacía la mañana del 11 de septiembre, especialmente los relatos de los que, gracias a la suerte o el destino, sobrevivieron. Por ejemplo, la de este tipo que volvió a casa el día antes de su luna de miel. Esa noche, la del 10 de septiembre, su novia pensó prepararle un burrito casero. El burrito estaba asqueroso. Pero el amor ignora estos detalles y lo importante es el gesto, no la digestión. Él se lo agradeció, le dijo que la amaba mucho, y le pidió otro.

A la mañana siguiente, 11/09/01, él estaba en el subterráneo, viajando desde Brooklyn hasta su oficina, ubicada en uno de los pisos más altos del World Trade Center. El subte iba hacia Manhattan, pero el burrito iba hacia el sur, y cuando digo sur no quiero decir la costa de New Jersey. Comenzó a sentirse mal, realmente mal, y decidió bajarse una estación antes que la de las Torres Gemelas. Subió corriendo las escaleras, desesperado por un baño. Pero estaba en New York, y la cosa no era tan sencilla. La revolución de los libreros

Mi historia del 11 de septiembre no es tan urgente. Estaba durmiendo en Santa Mónica. El teléfono sonó a las 6.30 AM y era mi suegro. "¡Están atacando Nueva York!", escuché que gritaba en mi oído semidormido. Quise decirle: "Sí, bueno, y qué. ¡Son las seis de la mañana!". "¡Hay guerra en Nueva York!", continuó ella. Esto tampoco tenía sentido porque, se sabe, siempre parece que hay guerra en Nueva York. "Encendé el televisor", dijo, y lo hice. Desperté a mi esposa y vimos las dos torres ardiendo. Tratamos de llamar a nuestra hija que vive en Nueva York, no lo conseguimos; después intentamos comunicarnos con nuestra amiga Joanne (que trabaja cerca del World Trade Center). Tampoco la encontramos. Así que nos quedamos ahí sentados, estupefactos. No dejamos la cama ni sacamos los ojos del televisor hasta las cinco de la tarde, cuando finalmente averiguamos que nuestra hija y Joanne estaban bien. Pero un productor con el que habíamos trabajado recientemente, Bill Weems, no estaba bien. Cuando los canales comenzaron a dar los nombres de los que estaban en los aviones, apareció el de Bill en la pantalla. Mi último recuerdo de él era de nosotros dos, divirtiéndonos en una casa funeraria mientras rodábamos un documental sobre la industria del tabaco. Juntar a dos tipos con humor negro cerca de un puñado de enterrados resulta en lo que yo llamaría nirvana. ¿De verdad? ¿Ha cambiado? ¿Cómo? ¿Tenemos la suficiente distancia con ese trágico día como para hacernos esta pregunta y encontrar una respuesta inteligente? Las cosas ciertamente cambiaron para la esposa de Bill y su hija de siete años. Es un crimen evidente haberle quitado a su padre a tan corta edad. Y la vida cambió para los seres queridos de los otros tres mil que fueron asesinados. Nunca dejarán atrás la tristeza que sienten. Se les dice que tienen que seguir adelante. Pero ¿hacia dónde? Todos los que perdimos a alguien sabemos que mientras la vida sigue adelante, la piedra en la boca del estómago, la congoja en el corazón, nunca nos abandonarán, así que hay que encontrar maneras de abrazar la desdicha y poner en funcionamiento mecanismos que sirvan para los que siguen vivos. Mientras tanto, en la lejana Washington DC, la vida también está cambiando. Aprovechándose de nuestro duelo y nuestro miedo de que "eso" pueda volver a suceder, un presidente usa a los muertos del 11 de septiembre como conveniente coartada, como justificación, para alterar nuestra forma de vida. ¿Para eso murieron? ¿Para que George W. Bush pueda transformar el país en Texas? Ya provocamos dos guerras desde el 11 de septiembre, y no sería raro que próximamente se iniciara una tercera y hasta una cuarta. Si permitimos que esto continúe, entonces sólo conseguiremos deshonrar la memoria de los tres mil muertos. Sé que Bill Weems no murió para poder ser usado como excusa para bombardear inocentes en el extranjero. Si su vida y su muerte tendrán un significado a partir de ahora, será que tenemos que garantizar que nadie más pierda su vida en este mundo demente y violento, un mundo que estamos forzados a hacer girar tal como queremos. Tengo suerte, supongo, de estar escribiendo estas líneas. No sólo porque ¡vivo en el país más formidable del mundo! sino porque después del 11 de septiembre, mi antigua editorial, Regan Books (que es una división de HarperCollins que es una división de News Corp que es dueño de Fox News y que es parte de un todo que le pertenece a Rupert Murdoch), intentó con todas sus fuerzas asegurar que mi carrera como autor llegara a un final temprano.

Las primeras 50.000 copias de Estúpidos hombres blancos salieron de la imprenta el día antes al 11/9, pero cuando sucedió la tragedia los camiones que debían llevarlas a todas las librerías de la nación no salieron de sus galpones. La editorial tuvo los libros como rehenes por cinco largos meses, no sólo por una cuestión de buen gusto y respeto (que yo podría entender), sino porque quería censurar lo que yo tenía para decir. Insistieron en que reescribiera el 50 por ciento del libro, y que quitara los segmentos que consideraban ofensivos para nuestro líder, Mr. Bush. Me negué a cambiar una palabra. Todo estuvo parado hasta que me llamaron por teléfono para decirme que no tenían opción y que, gracias a mi terquedad, iban a reciclar las 50.000 copias que estaban juntando polvo en un depósito de Scranton, Pennsylvania. Otros me dijeron que no tuviera demasiadas expectativas en cuanto a mi carrera como autor porque, a esta altura, ya se me consideraba problemático, un dolor en el culo que no quería entrar en el juego. Una librera de Nueva York escuchó esta llamada telefónica.

La librera, Ann Sparanese, una mujer que yo no conocía, envió e-mails a una lista de libreros; les decía que mi libro había sido prohibido. Su carta llegó a Internet y, en un par de días, cartas de libreros enojados inundaron Regan Books. Recibí un llamado de la policía Murdoch. "¿Qué les dijiste a los libreros?." "¿Cómo?", contesté. "No conozco ningún librero". "¡Sí los conocés! Les dijiste lo que íbamos a hacer con tu libro... ¡y ahora estamos recibiendo cartas indignadas de los libreros!". "Bueno", contesté, "supongo que los libreros son un grupo terrorista con el que no se quieren meter". Temiendo que apareciera una turba salvaje de libreros en la Quinta Avenida, una multitud que rodearía el edificio de HarperCollins y se negaría a partir hasta que mi libro fuera liberado del depósito de Scranton o el propio Murdoch les fuera entregado, News Corp se rindió. Tiraron mi libro en algunas librerías sin publicidad ni reseñas, y ofrecían un tour de tres ciudades: sólo se conseguía en Denver, Arlington y algún lugar de New Jersey. En otras palabras, el libro fue enviado a la mazmorra para una muerte rápida y sin dolor. Un operador de Murdoch me dijo cuánto lamentaba que no los hubiera escuchado. Sólo estaban tratando de ayudarme. El país respaldaba a George W. Bush y era intelectualmente deshonesto de mi parte no reescribir el libro ni admitir que había hecho un buen trabajo desde el 11/9.

Usted no está en contacto con el pueblo norteamericano, me dijo, y su libro sufrirá por eso. Es cierto: yo estaba tan desconectado de mis compatriotas que, horas después del lanzamiento, el libro llegó al puesto nº 1 en Amazon... y en cinco días la novena edición se agotó. Mientras escribo esto, va por la edición número 52.

Lo peor que se le puede decir a un pueblo libre en un país que todavía es en su mayor parte libre es que no puede leer algo. Que mi opinión haya sido escuchada y que mi libro haya sido el más vendido en no-ficción del año en los Estados Unidos dice mucho sobre este gran país. El pueblo no será intimidado ni amenazado por aquellos que tienen el poder. El pueblo norteamericano parece no saber lo que está sucediendo la mitad del tiempo, y pueden pasar demasiadas horas eligiendo fundas de diferentes colores para sus teléfonos celulares, pero cuando los presionan, están a la altura de las circunstancias y saben lo que es correcto.

Así que aquí estoy con un nuevo libro, y nada menos que en AOLTimeWarner y Warner Books. Lo sé, lo sé, ¿cuándo aprenderé la lección? Pero hay buenas noticias. Mientras estuve escribiendo este libro, AOL ha intentado deshacerse de Warner Books. ¿Por qué querría una compañía mediática deshacerse de su división de libros? ¿Qué hizo Warner Books para molestar a los dioses de AOL? Supongo que si AOL quiere sacarse a estos tipos de encima, deben ser buena gente. Además, los otros tipos de Warner en esta intrincada red, los de Warner Bros. Pictures, son los que distribuyeron mi primera película, Roger & Me. Fueron buenos y decentes, y nunca amenazaron con "reciclarla".

OK, estoy racionalizando. Seis compañías de medios son dueñas de todo. ¡Hay que romper estos monopolios por el bien del país! El libre flujo de noticias e información en una democracia no debe estar en las manos de unos pocos hombres ricos. Aun así, me apoyaron un 100 por ciento y nunca me dijeron que era "problemático". Sin embargo, ellos no tienen que preocuparse por mí. Tienen que preocuparse por los libreros. Y por ustedes.

Grandes combos

¿Cuál es la peor mentira que un presidente puede decir?

"No tuve relaciones sexuales con esta mujer, la señorita Lewinsky."

O:

"Tiene armas de destrucción masiva que apuntan directamente sobre los Estados Unidos y amenazan al país, a sus ciudadanos, a nuestros amigos y a nuestros aliados."

Una de estas mentiras puso al presidente en el banquillo. La otra no sólo le consiguió al mentiroso que la dijo la guerra que quería, sino que resultó en grandes negocios para sus amigos y virtualmente le aseguró una devastadora victoria en la próxima elección. Seguro, nos han mentido antes. Muchas mentiras, grandes, pequeñas, mentiras que han derrumbado nuestra imagen ante el mundo. "No soy un tramposo" fue una mentira, y Richard Nixon tuvo que hacer las valijas. "Lean mis labios: no habrá nuevos impuestos" fue más una promesa rota que una mentira, pero de todas maneras le costó al primer Bush su presidencia.

"La salsa ketchup es un vegetal" no fue técnicamente una mentira, pero fue un buen ejemplo de la insana mirada sobre el mundo que poseía la administración Reagan. Cuando las mentiras que nos llevaron a la guerra de Irak comenzaron a revelarse y quedar expuestas, las administración Bush trató de sobrevivir con su única maniobra defensiva: seguir repitiendo la mentira una y otra vez hasta que el pueblo americano se agote, y comience a creerla. Pero nada puede ocultar este hecho indiscutible: no hay mentira peor que aquella que asusta a los padres tanto como para enviar a sus propios hijos a pelear una guerra que no había por qué pelear porque, en realidad, nunca hubo una amenaza. Decirle falsamente a una nación que las vidas de sus ciudadanos están en peligro para anotarse un punto ("¡Él trató de matar a mi papi!"), o para hacer más ricos a tus ya millonarios amigos, bueno, en un mundo más justo, habría una celda especial en la prisión de Joliet para ese tipo de mentiroso. George Bush ha convertido a la Casa Blanca en la Casa del Combo, mintiendo una y otra vez, todo para conseguir su pequeña y sucia guerra. Funcionó.

Sus combos se consiguen en todas las formas, tamaños y configuraciones. Permítanme presentarles el sabroso menú Combo-en-Jefe, servido especialmente para usted. Lo llamaré "El combo de comidas de la Guerra de Irak". Nº 1, el Combo Original: "¡Irak tiene armas de destrucción masiva!".

No hay mejor manera de asustar a la población que decirle que hay un loco suelto que tiene (o está fabricando) armas nucleares. Armas que pretende usar contra usted.

George W. Bush sentó las bases para volvernos locos de miedo muy temprano. En su discurso frente a las Naciones Unidas en septiembre de 2002, Bush dijo sin que se le moviera un pelo que "Saddam Hussein ha desafiado todos nuestros esfuerzos y continúa desarrollando armas de destrucción masiva. Sólo estaremos completamente seguros de que tiene armas nucleares (sic) cuando las use, Dios no lo permita". Poco después, en Cincinnati, le dijo a una multitud: "Si el régimen iraquí tiene la oportunidad de producir, robar o comprar una cantidad de uranio enriquecido apenas más grande que una pelota de softball, podrá tener un arma nuclear en menos de un año... Ante esta evidencia, no podemos esperar la prueba final, el arma humeante, que puede llegar en la forma de hongo atómico". ¿Cómo convencer al público americano, antes reluctante, de ir a la guerra con Irak? Sólo diga "hongo atómico" y... ¡BOOM! ¡Observen cómo cambia la tendencia! Además del uranio de Africa, Bush dijo que los iraquíes "intentaban conseguir tubos de aluminio reforzados y otro equipo necesario para gases centrífugos, que se usan para enriquecer el uranio usado en armas nucleares". Un asunto terrorífico. Imaginen cuánto más aterrador de ser cierto. Josep Wilson, un diplomático norteamericano de carrera, con más de veinte años de experiencia, incluidos destinos en Africa e Irak, fue enviado por la CIA a Nigeria en el 2002 a investigar una denuncia británica según la cual Irak había intentado comprar "uranio amarillo". Wilson concluyó que la denuncia era falsa.

La Casa Blanca ignoró el informe de Wilson y en cambio mantuvo la falacia viva. Cuando la administración persistió con esta historia fabricada, un oficial dijo, según el New York Times: "La gente rezongó y pensó, ¿por qué están repitiendo esta basura?". Los documentos de Nigeria estaban tan mal falsificados que el ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de ese país que los había "firmado" ya no era parte del gobierno -de hecho, hacía más de una década que no cumplía funciones públicos, un hecho que se les pasó por alto a los mentirosos norteamericanos e ingleses.

El "descubrimiento" de los tubos de aluminio también resultó ser una amenaza ficticia. El 27 de junio de 2003 -un día antes del discurso sobre el Estado de la Unión de Bush-, el jefe de la International Atomic Agency, Mohamed El-Baradei, le dijo al Consejo de Seguridad de las Naciones Unidas que dos meses de inspecciones en Irak no habían producido evidencia alguna de actividades prohibidas en las antiguas instalaciones nucleares iraquíes. Además, El-Baradei dijo que los tubos de aluminio, "salvo que sean modificados, no serían aptos para manufacturar gases centrífugos".

De acuerdo con diversos artículos del Washington Post, Newsweek y otras publicaciones, la afirmación de que los tubos podrían ser usados para la producción de armas nucleares ya había sido cuestionada por los oficiales de inteligencia de Estados Unidos y Gran Bretaña. Los inspectores de Naciones Unidas dijeron que habían encontrado pruebas de que Irak planeaba usar esos tubos para construir pequeños cohetes, no armas nucleares. Y los iraquíes no intentaban comprar el equipamiento en secreto: podía acceder a su orden de compra desde Internet. Pero el señor Bush no dejó que los hechos se interpusieran en su camino cuando dio el rudo discurso sobre el Estado de la Unión para casi 62 millones de televidentes el 28 de enero de 2003: "Saddam Hussein recientemente compró significativas cantidades de uranio africano", dijo. "Imaginen a aquellos diecinueve secuestradores con otras armas y otros planes, esta vez bajo las órdenes de Hussein. Bastaría un cráter, una vía, un caño deslizado dentro de este país para traer un día de horror como nadie nunca ha conocido. Haremos todo lo que esté en nuestro poder para asegurarnos de que ese día nunca llegue."

El 16 de marzo, el copresidente Dick Cheney apareció en el programa Meet The Press y le dijo a la nación que Hussein "se ha dedicado por completo a intentar adquirir armas nucleares. Y creemos que, de hecho, las posee". Tres días más tarde fuimos a la guerra.

Nº 2 Combo con Queso: "¡Irak tiene armas químicas y biológicas!".

En su discurso del 7 de octubre de 2002 en Cincinnati, George W. Bush ofreció este combo recién salido del horno: "Algunos quieren saber cuán urgente es este peligro para Estados Unidos y el mundo. El peligro es significativo, y sólo empeora con el tiempo. Si hoy sabemos que Hussein tiene armas peligrosas, ¿tiene sentido esperar a confrontralo mientras se hace cada vez más fuerte y desarrolla armas cada vez más peligrosas?". Después, sólo unos meses más tarde, Bush agregó el queso: "Numerosas fuentes nos dicen que Hussein recientemente autorizó a sus comandantes a usar armas químicas, las mismas armas que el dictador nos dice que no posee".

¿Quién no querría bombardear a ese bastardo de Saddam después de escuchar esto? El secretario de Estado Colin Powell fue más lejos -dijo que los iraquíes no sólo poseían armas químicas, sino que las tenían ¡sobre ruedas!-: "Una de las cuestiones más preocupantes que emergen de un grueso informe de inteligencia que poseemos sobre Irak y sus armas biológicas es la existencia de instalaciones de producción móviles, usadas para fabricar agentes biológicos", les dijo Powell a las Naciones Unidas. "Sabemos que Irak tiene por lo menos siete de estas fábricas de agentes biológicos móviles."

Continuó con tantos datos específicos que... ¡tenía que ser cierto! Y el miércoles, el oficial responsable de analizar para Powell la amenaza de las armas iraquíes declaró que el secretario de Estado había informado mal a los norteamericanos durante su discurso en las Naciones Unidas. Pero después de invadir Irak, el ejército de Estados Unidos no pudo encontrar un solo rastro de estos laboratorios móviles. Después de todo, con tantas palmeras bajo las que esconderlos, ¿quién podría culpar a nuestro ejército por no encontrarlos? Tampoco pudimos encontrar ningún arma química o biológica, aun cuando el 30 de marzo de 2003 el secretario de Defensa Donald Rumsfeld dijo en el programa This Week de ABC: "Sabemos dónde están. Están en el área cerca de Tikrit y en Bagdad, y de alguna manera en el este, oeste, sur y norte". Ah, bueno, ¡entonces está claro! ¡Ahora las encontraremos! ¡Muchas gracias! Finalmente, el 5 de junio de 2003, George W. Bush declaró: "Recientemente hemos encontrado dos fábricas móviles de armas biológicas, que son capaces de producir agentes biológicos. Este es el hombre que ha pasado décadas escondiendo herramientas de asesinato en masa. Sabía que los inspectores las estaban buscando".

Ese combo alcanzó para un día. Una investigación británica oficial sobre de "dos trailers" hallados en el norte de Irak concluyó: "No son laboratorios móviles que producen gérmenes para la guerra, como sostienen Tony Blair y George W. Bush, sino instalaciones que producen hidrógeno para cargar globos militares, tal como siempre afirmaron los iraquíes". Eso fue todo. ¡Tanques para inflar globos! ¡Armas de inflación masiva!

Nº 3 Combo con Tocino: "¡Irak tiene conexiones con Osama Bin Laden y Al Qaeda!".

Horas antes del ataque de 11/9, Donald Rumsfeld ya había adivinado quién era el responsable o, por lo menos, a quién deseaba castigar. De acuerdo con CBS News, Rumsfeld quería toda la información posible sobre los ataques, y le dijo a su equipo de investigación: "Vayan hasta el fondo. Barran con todo. Yo digo Osama, usted dice Usama... y Rumsfeld sólo dice la palabra mágica, "Saddam", y antes de que nos demos cuenta, ¡todo el mundo la está repitiendo! El general retirado Wesley Clark declaró que había recibido llamadas, el mismo 11/9 y durante las semanas siguientes, de miembros de "think tanks" y de gente de la Casa Blanca diciéndole que usara su posición como asesor de la CNN para que "conectara" los ataques de 9/11 con Saddam Hussein. Dijo que lo haría, si podían presentarle pruebas. Nadie pudo. Durante las preliminares de la guerra, en el otoño de 2002, Bush y miembros de su administración siguieron repitiendo la conexión, despegada y limpia de cualquier detalle -o "hecho"-, así que permaneció linda y sencilla y fácil de recordar. Bush circuló por el país en campaña con candidatos republicanos al Congreso, infectando la mente del pueblo norteamericano con la falsa conexión Saddam/Osama en un loop continuo.

Por si alguien se lo perdía, Bush continuó machacando con el tema en su discurso sobre el Estado de la Unión el 28 de enero de 2003: "Tenemos evidencia de fuentes de inteligencia, comunicaciones secretas y declaraciones de gente ahora bajo custodia que revelan que Saddam Hussein ayuda y protege a los terroristas, incluidos miembros de Al Qaeda".
Bush insistió. Inmediatamente después del discurso, una encuesta online de CBS demostró que el apoyo a la intervención militar en Irak crecía.

Una semana más tarde, el 5 de febrero, las declaraciones de Bush fueron reproducidas por Colin Powell en su largo discurso ante el Consejo de Seguridad de Naciones Unidas. Después de detallar las trabas que les ponía Irak a las inspecciones de armas, se lanzó a la conexión Saddam/Osama: "Quiero llamarles la atención hoy sobre el potencialmente siniestro nexo entre Irak y la red Al Qaeda, un nexo que combina las clásicas organizaciones terroristas con métodos modernos de asesinato".

Pero la carne de la "evidencia" de la administración ya se estaba poniendo rancia. Durante esa misma semana de febrero, un documento de inteligencia británico se filtró a la BBC: decía que no había relación alguna entre Osama y Hussein. Los dos malvados habían tratado de ser amigos en el pasado, pero el encuentro había resultado como un mal episodio de Cita a ciegas: se odiaron a simple vista. Según este informe, "las motivaciones de Bin Laden entran en un conflicto ideológico con las características del actual Irak". Para colmo, la fábrica de explosivos y veneno de Al Qaeda que Bush y su equipo insistían en que era protegida por Saddam estaba ubicada en el norte de Irak -una zona controlada por los kurdos y patrullada por aviones estadounidenses y británicos desde la primera mitad de los 90. El norte de Irak estaba fuera del alcance de Hussein, y dentro del nuestro. La base en realidad le pertenecía a Ansar al Isalam, un grupo fundamentalista militante cuyo líder había clasificado a Hussein como "el enemigo". Una visita a la base realizada por un importante grupo de periodistas internacionales rápidamente reveló que allí no se estaban fabricando armas.

Pero nada de eso importó. El presidente lo había dicho... ¡tenía que ser cierto! Sí, el combo tuvo tan buen resultado que en los meses anteriores a la guerra contra Irak, las encuestas mostraron que la mitad de los norteamericanos creían que Saddam Hussein estaba relacionado con la red de Osama Bin Laden. Aun antes de que Bush lo dijera en su discurso sobre el Estado de la Unión del 2003, y Powell presentara la "evidencia" Osama-Hussein en las Naciones Unidas, una encuesta de Knight-Ridder halló que la mitad de los interrogados ya presumía incorrectamente que uno o más de los secuestradores de 11/9 tenían ciudadanía iraquí. Bush ni siquiera tuvo que decirlo.

Seven

Tengo siete preguntas para usted, señor Bush. Las formulo en nombre de los 3000 muertos de 11/9, y en nombre del pueblo de Estados Unidos. No buscamos venganza. Sólo queremos saber qué sucedió, y qué podemos hacer para llevar a los asesinos ante la Justicia, para prevenir futuros ataques contra nuestros ciudadanos.

1) ¿Es cierto que los Bin Laden tuvieron relaciones comerciales con su familia durante los últimos veinticinco años?

2) ¿De qué se trata esa "relación especial" entre los Bush y la familia real saudita?

3) ¿Quién atacó a los Estados Unidos el 11 de septiembre? ¿Un tipo en diálisis desde una cueva de Afganistán o su amiga Arabia Saudita?

4) ¿Por qué permitió que un jet privado saudita volara alrededor de Estados Unidos días después del 11 de septiembre, y por qué recogió a miembros de la familia Bin Laden y se los llevó lejos de nuestro país sin que fueran investigados por el FBI?

5) ¿Por qué protege los derechos de la Segunda Enmienda de potenciales terroristas?

6) ¿Sabía que, cuando usted era gobernador de Texas, los talibanes viajaron a su estado para entrevistarse con sus amigos, dueños de compañías de gas y petróleo?

7) ¿Por qué tenía esa cara cuando la mañana del 11 de septiembre, en un salón de clases de Florida, su jefe de Personal le dijo: "Estados Unidos está siendo atacado"?

La lección

¿Recuerdan esa lección sobre tratar a los demás como nos gustaría ser tratados? ¡Todavía funciona! Cuando uno trata bien a la gente, el 99.9 por ciento del tiempo responderán de la misma manera. ¿Qué pasaría si toda nuestra política exterior se basara en este noble concepto? ¿Qué pasaría si fuéramos un país conocido por ayudar a la gente en vez de buscar primero explotar su trabajo o sus recursos naturales? ¿Qué pasaría si fuéramos un país que comparte su increíble riqueza -y que la comparte hasta el punto en que estaríamos dispuestos a seguir adelante sin algunos de los lujos a los que estamos acostumbrados? ¿Cómo se sentirían entonces los pobres y desesperados del mundo ante nosotros? ¿No reduciría eso nuestras chances de ser víctimas de ataques terroristas? ¿No sería un mundo mejor en el cual vivir? ¿No es la forma correcta de proceder? El hecho es que el número de gente que voluntariamente se inmolaría para matarnos es ínfimo. Es cierto, cualquiera preparado a morir por una causa puede eventualmente intentarlo, pero esa gente existe en todas partes, y siempre fue así. La "Guerra contra el Terror" no debería ser una guerra en Afganistán o Irak o Corea del Norte o Siria o Irán o cualquier lugar que terminemos invadiendo. Debería ser una guerra contra nuestros propios impulsos oscuros.

THE LIES OF GEORGE W. BUSH

Mastering the Politics of Deception

By David Corn

George Washington, at least according to Parson Weems, never told a lie. Subsequent presidents, as David Corn admits, have not always lived up to his standard. In a rich gallery of examples, we remember Lyndon Johnson (the Gulf of Tonkin), Richard Nixon ("I am not a crook"), Ronald Reagan ("I did not trade arms for hostages"), George H.W. Bush ("Read my lips: no new taxes") and, of course, Bill Clinton ("I did not have sexual relations with that woman").

It is Corn's contention, however, that George W. Bush not only knows how to lie but has done it on a grander scale, deliberately, systematically and to good effect, ever since he entered politics, and before that, too. "George Bush is a liar," he begins. "He has lied large and small. He has lied directly and by omission. He has misstated facts, knowingly or not. He has misled. He has broken promises, been unfaithful to political vows. Through his campaign for the presidency and his first years in the White House, he has mugged the truth -- not merely in honest error, but deliberately, consistently, and repeatedly to advance his career and his agenda."

Corn alleges that between his (unsuccessful) campaign for Congress in 1978 and his campaign for governor of Texas in 1994, Bush changed his position on abortion from "pro-choice" to "pro-life"; that he claimed to have been in the Air Force when he was in the Texas Air National Guard; and that he lied about an arrest for drunken driving. Corn also contends that in the 2000 South Carolina primary, Bush allowed his staff, if he did not order them, to put about the crudest calumnies about his dangerous rival, Sen. John McCain. He maintains, too, that the president did not speak the truth when he said he did not meet Kenneth Lay (of Enron) until after 1994, when records (so Corn says) show that Bush's oil venture company, Spectrum 7, was a partner with an Enron subsidiary in Texas in 1986.

Corn, the Washington editor of the Nation, makes no pretense of political impartiality. This is a fierce polemic, but it is based on an immense amount of research. In my judgment it does present a serious case for the president's partisans to answer in relation to both domestic and foreign policy, a case that ought to be in voters' minds when they cast their ballots in the 2004 presidential election.

On the home front, the president has systematically advocated tax cuts as if they would make a real difference to broad swaths of the American people. In reality, as Corn and many others have shown, their benefits will go overwhelmingly to a small percentage at the top of the economic tree. For example, the proposed tax cuts would give more than $93,000 to a family with a million-dollar income, while half of all taxpayers would receive $100 or less. According to the Financial Times, the stimulus the cuts can be expected to give to the economy would be "negligible." When this is pointed out, the president and his men mutter reflexively about "class war."

In individual cases, Bush's misrepresentation of the impact of legislation verges on the absurd. For example, he boasted that he would "eliminate the death tax" (the Republican phrase for estate tax) "to keep family farms in the family." The picture is of weeping towheaded kids evicted by agents of an unfeeling bureaucracy from crimson-painted homesteads amid the cottonwoods. But under current laws a farm couple can pass on a farm worth more than $4 million untaxed if their heirs continue to work it for 10 years. The IRS states that "almost no working farmers" owe any estate tax. Even such a farmer-friendly outfit as the American Farm Bureau cannot cite a single example of a farm sold because of estate tax. Politics, not agrarian distress, lay behind this myth.

The cynicism with which foreign policy has been sold to the American public, Corn shows, is even more barefaced. Understandably, perhaps, the Bush administration underestimated civilian casualties in Afghanistan. Less forgivably, its spokesmen, from Vice President Cheney down, persistently hinted that the 9/11 terrorist Mohamed Atta met Iraqi agents in Prague, thus justifying an attack on Iraq, though there appears to be no evidence that this is true, and reason to believe that Atta traveled to Prague to buy a cheap air ticket to the United States.

More generally, the president and key officials in his administration have shuffled and equivocated in almost all they have said about the decision to invade Iraq. It is clear that decision was taken long before Sept. 11, 2001. It seems to have been taken not because Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction (as it now appears he did not, at least when the war began) or because he might pass them to al Qaeda (with whom he was on the worst of terms), or even because he was a vicious tyrant -- that, after all, had not stopped the United States from tilting toward him in 1983 -- but to fit in with what looks like a naive neoconservative dream that war in Iraq would produce a peaceful, democratic Middle East.

Readers can hardly avoid drawing three troubling conclusions from Corn's painstaking indictment. The first is that the Bush administration has been even more willing than its predecessors to spin, prevaricate and, if necessary, coldly lie for its own advantage. The second is that, with honorable exceptions, the American news media have not lived up to their reputation for hard-nosed skepticism when it comes to challenging the administration's claims. The third is more troubling still. It used to be unacceptable to accuse presidents and Cabinet secretaries of wholesale lying. But now Corn is by no means alone in throwing that word around. Indeed a whole literary genre has come into existence: political-lie porn. Al Franken's "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them" is a bestseller, while from the other side of the fence Ann Coulter screams back "liberal lies" like a conservative fishwife in the same billingsgate. A political culture in which lies and charges of lying are thought normal is a dangerous one. Weimar was one such, and it was Adolf Hitler who learned how to exploit it. The currency, not only of lying but also of charges of lying, suggests just how viciously polarized American politics has become, and 2004 is not yet here.

Sólo estaban tratando de ayudarme. El país respaldaba a George W. Bush y era intelectualmente deshonesto de mi parte no reescribir el libro ni admitir que había hecho un buen trabajo desde el 11/9.

Pero nada puede ocultar este hecho indiscutible: no hay mentira peor que aquella que asusta a los padres tanto como para enviar a sus propios hijos a pelear una guerra que no había por qué pelear porque, en realidad, nunca hubo una amenaza. Decirle falsamente a una nación que las vidas de sus ciudadanos están en peligro para anotarse un punto ("¡Él trató de matar a mi papi!"), o para hacer más ricos a tus ya millonarios amigos, bueno, en un mundo más justo, habría una celda especial en la prisión de Joliet para ese tipo de mentiroso. George Bush ha convertido a la Casa Blanca en la Casa del Combo, mintiendo una y otra vez, todo para conseguir su pequeña y sucia guerra. Funcionó.

Sólo diga "hongo atómico" y... ¡BOOM! ¡Observen cómo cambia la tendencia! Además del uranio de Africa, Bush dijo que los iraquíes "intentaban conseguir tubos de aluminio reforzados y otro equipo necesario para gases centrífugos, que se usan para enriquecer el uranio usado en armas nucleares". Un asunto terrorífico. Imaginen cuánto más aterrador de ser cierto. Josep Wilson, un diplomático norteamericano de carrera, con más de veinte años de experiencia, incluidos destinos en Africa e Irak, fue enviado por la CIA a Nigeria en el 2002 a investigar una denuncia británica según la cual Irak había intentado comprar "uranio amarillo". Wilson concluyó que la denuncia era falsa.

> La Casa Blanca ignoró el informe de Wilson y en cambio mantuvo la falacia viva. Cuando la administración persistió con esta historia fabricada, un oficial dijo, según el New York Times: "La gente rezongó y pensó, ¿por qué están repitiendo esta basura?". Los documentos de Nigeria estaban tan mal falsificados que el ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de ese país que los había "firmado" ya no era parte del gobierno -de hecho, hacía más de una década que no cumplía funciones públicos, un hecho que se les pasó por alto a los mentirosos norteamericanos e ingleses.

> El "descubrimiento" de los tubos de aluminio también resultó ser una amenaza ficticia. El 27 de junio de 2003 -un día antes del discurso sobre el Estado de la Unión de Bush-, el jefe de la International Atomic Agency, Mohamed El-Baradei, le dijo al Consejo de Seguridad de las Naciones Unidas que dos meses de inspecciones en Irak no habían producido evidencia alguna de actividades prohibidas en las antiguas instalaciones nucleares iraquíes. Además, El-Baradei dijo que los tubos de aluminio, "salvo que sean modificados, no serían aptos para manufacturar gases centrífugos".

Después, sólo unos meses más tarde, Bush agregó el queso: "Numerosas fuentes nos dicen que Hussein recientemente autorizó a sus comandantes a usar armas químicas, las mismas armas que el dictador nos dice que no posee".

Después de todo, con tantas palmeras bajo las que esconderlos, ¿quién podría culpar a nuestro ejército por no encontrarlos? Tampoco pudimos encontrar ningún arma química o biológica, aun cuando el 30 de marzo de 2003 el secretario de Defensa Donald Rumsfeld dijo en el programa This Week de ABC: "Sabemos dónde están. Están en el área cerca de Tikrit y en Bagdad, y de alguna manera en el este, oeste, sur y norte". Ah, bueno, ¡entonces está claro! ¡Ahora las encontraremos! ¡Muchas gracias! Finalmente, el 5 de junio de 2003, George W. Bush declaró: "Recientemente hemos encontrado dos fábricas móviles de armas biológicas, que son capaces de producir agentes biológicos. Este es el hombre que ha pasado décadas escondiendo herramientas de asesinato en masa. Sabía que los inspectores las estaban buscando".

> Ese combo alcanzó para un día. Una investigación británica oficial sobre de "dos trailers" hallados en el norte de Irak concluyó: "No son laboratorios móviles que producen gérmenes para la guerra, como sostienen Tony Blair y George W. Bush, sino instalaciones que producen hidrógeno para cargar globos militares, tal como siempre afirmaron los iraquíes". Eso fue todo. ¡Tanques para inflar globos! ¡Armas de inflación masiva!

> Horas antes del ataque de 11/9, Donald Rumsfeld ya había adivinado quién era el responsable o, por lo menos, a quién deseaba castigar. De acuerdo con CBS News, Rumsfeld quería toda la información posible sobre los ataques, y le dijo a su equipo de investigación: "Vayan hasta el fondo. Barran con todo. Incluyan las cosas relacionadas y las otras". Ya tenía datos de inteligencia que indicaban una conexión con Osama (a quien llamó Usama), pero quería más porque tenía otros objetivos en mente. Quería una inteligencia lo suficientemente buena como para "pegarle a S.H. (Saddam Hussein) al mismo tiempo. No sólo a U.B.L.".

> Yo digo Osama, usted dice Usama... y Rumsfeld sólo dice la palabra mágica, "Saddam", y antes de que nos demos cuenta, ¡todo el mundo la está repitiendo! El general retirado Wesley Clark declaró que había recibido llamadas, el mismo 11/9 y durante las semanas siguientes, de miembros de "think tanks" y de gente de la Casa Blanca diciéndole que usara su posición como asesor de la CNN para que "conectara" los ataques de 9/11 con Saddam Hussein. Dijo que lo haría, si podían presentarle pruebas. Nadie pudo. Durante las preliminares de la guerra, en el otoño de 2002, Bush y miembros de su administración siguieron repitiendo la conexión, despegada y limpia de cualquier detalle -o "hecho"-, así que permaneció linda y sencilla y fácil de recordar. > Bush insistió. Inmediatamente después del discurso, una encuesta online de CBS demostró que el apoyo a la intervención militar en Irak crecía.

> Una semana más tarde, el 5 de febrero, las declaraciones de Bush fueron reproducidas por Colin Powell en su largo discurso ante el Consejo de Seguridad de Naciones Unidas. Después de detallar las trabas que les ponía Irak a las inspecciones de armas, se lanzó a la conexión Saddam/Osama: "Quiero llamarles la atención hoy sobre el potencialmente siniestro nexo entre Irak y la red Al Qaeda, un nexo que combina las clásicas organizaciones terroristas con métodos modernos de asesinato".

> Pero la carne de la "evidencia" de la administración ya se estaba poniendo rancia. Durante esa misma semana de febrero, un documento de inteligencia británico se filtró a la BBC: decía que no había relación alguna entre Osama y Hussein. Los dos malvados habían tratado de ser amigos en el pasado, pero el encuentro había resultado como un mal episodio de Cita a ciegas: se odiaron a simple vista. Según este informe, "las motivaciones de Bin Laden entran en un conflicto ideológico con las características del actual Irak". Para colmo, la fábrica de explosivos y veneno de Al Qaeda que Bush y su equipo insistían en que era protegida por Saddam estaba ubicada en el norte de Irak -una zona controlada por los kurdos y patrullada por aviones estadounidenses y británicos desde la primera mitad de los 90. El norte de Irak estaba fuera del alcance de Hussein, y dentro del nuestro. La base en realidad le pertenecía a Ansar al Isalam, un grupo fundamentalista militante cuyo líder había clasificado a Hussein como "el enemigo". Una visita a la base realizada por un importante grupo de periodistas internacionales rápidamente reveló que allí no se estaban fabricando armas.

> Pero nada de eso importó. El presidente lo había dicho... ¡tenía que ser cierto! Sí, el combo tuvo tan buen resultado que en los meses anteriores a la guerra contra Irak, las encuestas mostraron que la mitad de los norteamericanos creían que Saddam Hussein estaba relacionado con la red de Osama Bin Laden. Aun antes de que Bush lo dijera en su discurso sobre el Estado de la Unión del 2003, y Powell presentara la "evidencia" Osama-Hussein en las Naciones Unidas, una encuesta de Knight-Ridder halló que la mitad de los interrogados ya presumía incorrectamente que uno o más de los secuestradores de 11/9 tenían ciudadanía iraquí. CORTE FEDERAL EEUU REPRENDE A BUSH POR DETENIDOS EN GUANTÁNAMO

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - En una severa reprimenda al gobierno del presidente George W. Bush, una corte de apelaciones de Estados Unidos determinó el jueves que el gobierno no puede mantener presos indefinidamente en la base de Guantánamo, en Cuba, a los "combatientes enemigos" capturados en Afganistán.

En una decisión de 2-1, la novena Corte de Circuito de Apelaciones dijo que esa detención indefinida era inconsistente con las leyes estadounidenses y causaba preocupaciones bajo las normas internacionales. Los más de 600 detenidos deberían tener acceso a abogados, agregó.

"Aún en tiempos de emergencia nacional --de hecho, particularmente en esos tiempos-- la obligación de la rama judicial es asegurar la preservación de nuestros valores constitucionales y evitar que la rama ejecutiva atropelle sin consideraciones los derechos de los ciudadanos y los extranjeros por igual," dijo la corte.

"Durante casi dos años, Estados Unidos ha sometido a más de 600 de esos cautivos a una detención indefinida, pero no les ha proporcionado los medios para cuestionar su confinamiento, para objetar el hecho de que no se les reconozca como prisioneros de guerra, para consultar con asesores legales o incluso para presentar reclamos por identificaciones equivocadas," agregó.

La decisión se dio a conocer el mismo día en que la segunda Corte de Circuito de Apelaciones de Nueva York dijera que el gobierno no podía detener a un ciudadano, arrestado en territorio norteamericano, como si fuera un combatiente enemigo.

En una decisión también de dos votos contra uno, esa corte dijo que sólo el Congreso puede autorizar esas detenciones y ordenó al gobierno que libere a José Padilla en un plazo de 30 días.

Padilla es sospechoso de haber participado en una presunta conspiración de la red extremista islámica Al Qaeda para hacer estallar una "bomba sucia" en Estados Unidos. Padilla, de origen puertorriqueño, fue detenido hace 18 meses a su llegada al país procedente de Pakistán.

Las decisiones de las dos cortes son las últimas señales de los crecientes reveses legales contra las medidas adoptadas por el gobierno de Bush tras los atentados del 11 de septiembre del 2001.

Tras los atentados, el Congreso aprobó el "Acta Patriótica" que amplió las capacidades de vigilancia e investigación de los organismos del orden público. El fiscal general John Ashcroft argumentó que la ley era necesaria para proteger al país contra actos de terrorismo.

In a rich gallery of examples, we remember Lyndon Johnson (the Gulf of Tonkin), Richard Nixon ("I am not a crook"), Ronald Reagan ("I did not trade arms for hostages"), George H.W. Bush ("Read my lips: no new taxes") and, of course, Bill Clinton ("I did not have sexual relations with that woman").

> It is Corn's contention, however, that George W. Bush not only knows how to lie but has done it on a grander scale, deliberately, systematically and to good effect, ever since he entered politics, and before that, too. "George Bush is a liar," he begins. "He has lied large and small. He has lied directly and by omission. He has misstated facts, knowingly or not. He has misled. He has broken promises, been unfaithful to political vows. Through his campaign for the presidency and his first years in the White House, he has mugged the truth -- not merely in honest error, but deliberately, consistently, and repeatedly to advance his career and his agenda."

For example, he boasted that he would "eliminate the death tax" (the Republican phrase for estate tax) "to keep family farms in the family." The picture is of weeping towheaded kids evicted by agents of an unfeeling bureaucracy from crimson-painted homesteads amid the cottonwoods. But under current laws a farm couple can pass on a farm worth more than $4 million untaxed if their heirs continue to work it for 10 years. The IRS states that "almost no working farmers" owe any estate tax. Even such a farmer-friendly outfit as the American Farm Bureau cannot cite a single example of a farm sold because of estate tax. Politics, not agrarian distress, lay behind this myth.

> The cynicism with which foreign policy has been sold to the American public, Corn shows, is even more barefaced. Understandably, perhaps, the Bush administration underestimated civilian casualties in Afghanistan. Less forgivably, its spokesmen, from Vice President Cheney down, persistently hinted that the 9/11 terrorist Mohamed Atta met Iraqi agents in Prague, thus justifying an attack on Iraq, though there appears to be no evidence that this is true, and reason to believe that Atta traveled to Prague to buy a cheap air ticket to the United States.

> More generally, the president and key officials in his administration have shuffled and equivocated in almost all they have said about the decision to invade Iraq. It is clear that decision was taken long before Sept. 11, 2001. It seems to have been taken not because Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction (as it now appears he did not, at least when the war began) or because he might pass them to al Qaeda (with whom he was on the worst of terms), or even because he was a vicious tyrant -- that, after all, had not stopped the United States from tilting toward him in 1983 -- but to fit in with what looks like a naive neoconservative dream that war in Iraq would produce a peaceful, democratic Middle East.

> Readers can hardly avoid drawing three troubling conclusions from Corn's painstaking indictment. The second is that, with honorable exceptions, the American news media have not lived up to their reputation for hard-nosed skepticism when it comes to challenging the administration's claims. The third is more troubling still. It used to be unacceptable to accuse presidents and Cabinet secretaries of wholesale lying. But now Corn is by no means alone in throwing that word around. Indeed a whole literary genre has come into existence: political-lie porn. Al Franken's "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them" is a bestseller, while from the other side of the fence Ann Coulter screams back "liberal lies" like a conservative fishwife in the same billingsgate. A political culture in which lies and charges of lying are thought normal is a dangerous one. Weimar was one such, and it was Adolf Hitler who learned how to exploit it. The currency, not only of lying but also of charges of lying, suggests just how viciously polarized American politics has become, and 2004 is not yet here.

Cuando los canales comenzaron a dar los nombres de los que estaban en los aviones, apareció el de Bill en la pantalla. Mi último recuerdo de él era de nosotros dos, divirtiéndonos en una casa funeraria mientras rodábamos un documental sobre la industria del tabaco. Juntar a dos tipos con humor negro cerca de un puñado de enterrados resulta en lo que yo llamaría nirvana. Tengo suerte, supongo, de estar escribiendo estas líneas. No sólo porque ¡vivo en el país más formidable del mundo! sino porque después del 11 de septiembre, mi antigua editorial, Regan Books (que es una división de HarperCollins que es una división de News Corp que es dueño de Fox News y que es parte de un todo que le pertenece a Rupert Murdoch), intentó con todas sus fuerzas asegurar que mi carrera como autor llegara a un final temprano.

Una librera de Nueva York escuchó esta llamada telefónica.

Sólo estaban tratando de ayudarme. El país respaldaba a George W. Bush y era intelectualmente deshonesto de mi parte no reescribir el libro ni admitir que había hecho un buen trabajo desde el 11/9.

Sólo diga "hongo atómico" y... ¡BOOM! ¡Observen cómo cambia la tendencia! Además del uranio de Africa, Bush dijo que los iraquíes "intentaban conseguir tubos de aluminio reforzados y otro equipo necesario para gases centrífugos, que se usan para enriquecer el uranio usado en armas nucleares". Un asunto terrorífico. Imaginen cuánto más aterrador de ser cierto. Josep Wilson, un diplomático norteamericano de carrera, con más de veinte años de experiencia, incluidos destinos en Africa e Irak, fue enviado por la CIA a Nigeria en el 2002 a investigar una denuncia británica según la cual Irak había intentado comprar "uranio amarillo". Wilson concluyó que la denuncia era falsa.

"Imaginen a aquellos diecinueve secuestradores con otras armas y otros planes, esta vez bajo las órdenes de Hussein. Bastaría un cráter, una vía, un caño deslizado dentro de este país para traer un día de horror como nadie nunca ha conocido. Haremos todo lo que esté en nuestro poder para asegurarnos de que ese día nunca llegue."

Están en el área cerca de Tikrit y en Bagdad, y de alguna manera en el este, oeste, sur y norte". Ah, bueno, ¡entonces está claro! ¡Ahora las encontraremos! ¡Muchas gracias! Finalmente, el 5 de junio de 2003, George W. Bush declaró: "Recientemente hemos encontrado dos fábricas móviles de armas biológicas, que son capaces de producir agentes biológicos. Este es el hombre que ha pasado décadas escondiendo herramientas de asesinato en masa. Sabía que los inspectores las estaban buscando".

Durante las preliminares de la guerra, en el otoño de 2002, Bush y miembros de su administración siguieron repitiendo la conexión, despegada y limpia de cualquier detalle -o "hecho"-, así que permaneció linda y sencilla y fácil de recordar. Bush circuló por el país en campaña con candidatos republicanos al Congreso, infectando la mente del pueblo norteamericano con la falsa conexión Saddam/Osama en un loop continuo.

Durante esa misma semana de febrero, un documento de inteligencia británico se filtró a la BBC: decía que no había relación alguna entre Osama y Hussein. Según este informe, "las motivaciones de Bin Laden entran en un conflicto ideológico con las características del actual Irak". El norte de Irak estaba fuera del alcance de Hussein, y dentro del nuestro. La base en realidad le pertenecía a Ansar al Isalam, un grupo fundamentalista militante cuyo líder había clasificado a Hussein como "el enemigo". Una visita a la base realizada por un importante grupo de periodistas internacionales rápidamente reveló que allí no se estaban fabricando armas.

El hecho es que el número de gente que voluntariamente se inmolaría para matarnos es ínfimo. Es cierto, cualquiera preparado a morir por una causa puede eventualmente intentarlo, pero esa gente existe en todas partes, y siempre fue así. La "Guerra contra el Terror" no debería ser una guerra en Afganistán o Irak o Corea del Norte o Siria o Irán o cualquier lugar que terminemos invadiendo. Debería ser una guerra contra nuestros propios impulsos oscuros.
