The coauthors open with a table of articles keyed to the National Research Council's "National Science Education Standards for Content (Grades 9–12)," close with back matter highlighted by annotated and usably sized lists of multimedia resources, and in between offer more than 200 alphabetically arranged entries. The articles range in scope from "Big Bang Theory" to "Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis," and in topic from "Acid Rain" and "Acoustics" to "Telescopes" and "Textile Chemistry." Several dozen biographical articles, plus a dozen essays (by Rosen and others) on such topics as "Laws: There Is Order in the World" broaden the potential audience to include general readers who are unwilling to tackle the dense equation- and formula-rich disquisitions that make up the bulk of this valuable survey. Small but unusually sharp photos, most in color and most being portraits or views of scientific gear, enhance the reasonable numbers of aptly placed tables, diagrams, and artists' renditions. Despite a severe case of "appendicitis" (there are 14, and there seems little point to most of them), this is well worth considering as a replacement for the earlier work, or as a more affordable (and current) substitute for the 18-volume Encyclopedia of Physical Science and Technology (Elsevier, 2001).—John Peters, New York Public Library (c) Copyright 2010. From This set includes 200 alphabetically arranged articles and is “intended to complement the material typically taught in high school physics and chemistry and in introductory college physics and chemistry courses.” Examples of entries include Acid rain, Cosmology, DNA fingerprinting, Green chemistry, Magnetism, Nanotechnology, and Particle physics. There are also entries for individuals such as Richard Feynman and Rosalind Franklin. Also included are 12 feature essays, for example, “The Chemistry of Forensic Science” and “Unification: Finding Oneness in Diversity.” Hundreds of color photos and illustrations help illuminate the entries, and each entry ends with a further-reading list. Following the entries are an index and more than a dozen appendixes, including a chronology, glossary, astronomical data, abbreviations, further resources, and the periodic table of elements. Preceding the entries is a list of “Entries Categorized by National Science Education Standards for Content (Grades 9–12).” This set joins Encyclopedia of Marine Science (2008), Encyclopedia of Life Science (2009), and other authoritative and accessible Facts On File science titles and is recommended for high-school, college, and public libraries.
