This book presents modern approaches to solving diffraction problems, for example, the ray, parabolic equation and comparison methods. A mathematical formulation of diffraction problems is given and the theoretical background and technical aspects of the various solution methods are discussed. A further feature is a detailed analysis of the final formula describing the asymptotic behaviour of the wave field. Systems treated in detail include wave fields concentrated in the vicinity of a boundary and isolated waves, such as "whispering gallery waves" and "jumping ball waves", as well as the point source wave field near a concave or convex boundary, which is important for applications.
